Romans had three names:
praeromen- personal and intimate name (Julius)
nomen- family name (Caesar)
cognomen- nickname to distinguish from family members (Gaius)

Rhetoric
Classical rhetoricians, three types of oratory:
Deliberative- used to persusade an audience in matters of public policy
Forensic- to acheive condemnation or approval for an individual’s actions
Epideictic or “display”- used in ceremonies to make judgements of a person or persons
“Speech-act theory”- when something is said, it is done.
“Ceasar says ‘Do this’, it is performed” (1.2.12).
