Omens
Elizabethans were highly superstitious people.
All of the Omens in Julius Caesar are up for interpretation. The characters often miss the deeper meaning of the omens.
Ghosts- Spirits who were forced to walk the Earth for retribution. These ghosts were usually stuck in purgatory, a horrible place to be for all of eternity. Ghosts were not like Halloween costumes or Casper, instead they were like zombies-- reanimated corpses.
The Ides of March- Explores the theme of Fate vs. Free Will. How much action did Caesar really have if everything was prophesied?
Weather- Intense weather typically indicated equally intense events to follow. For instance, the night the conspirators meet, there is lightning and thunder.
Animals- When the conpsirators meet, it’s not just thunder and lightning but also a nocturnal bird showing up at high noon; Cassius accepts his death because of eagles; lions regularly symbolize Caesar and royalty; Caesar sacrifices an animal which lacks a heart.
